For those who trust too easily

Don’t expect everyone’s intentions to be as pure as yours

Vulnerability

Here’s a life lesson that I’ve had for those who trust too easily

While your intentions are clear because you’re a naturally honest person, don’t expect the same from everyone else. People will keep you in the dark in order to maximize their options to get what they want. It’s human nature.

This can apply to many scenarios such as:

  • A company interviewing you for MULTIPLE rounds of interviews to find out they are going with another candidate they already sent an offer to. The company wanted to make sure you weren’t exponentially better.
  • Giving a signed contract, hiring and training them to find out that they are actively searching for other jobs
  • A friend making plans with you only to bail last minute when something better comes up
  • Someone in an romantic relationship with you who never make their intentions and thoughts clear about you. They wanted to string you along to test out the waters and consider you as an option rather than provide commitment.

And many more!

I’m sure this has happened to many people and has damaged their ability to trust, love, take risks and make the most of opportunities.

It is understandable, but what you need to do is exercise trust and vulnerability with caution and wisdom. If someone compromises your trust, it will hurt and break you. If you accept their apology, it doesn’t mean you have to let them back into your life. You need to recognize your self-worth, health and put yourself first.

How to prevent dishonest intention

You can’t! People who will lie to you to get what they want will always exist, but here’s what you can do to protect yourself.

When they tell you something:

Look in their eyes. Listen to their voice. What actions do they take? Don’t rely solely on their words.

Recognize that there will be people who will tell you what you want to hear to get what they want. Don’t let them.
